A number of recreational opportunities are available within Oconee County. There are four athletic complexes within Oconee County, as well as several parks. The complexes include Oconee Veterans Park, Herman C. Michael Park, Heritage Park, and Harris Shoals Park. There are also lots of different agribusiness and arts related activities to participate in with your children.
Oconee Veterans Park
The Oconee Veterans Park is a beautiful recreational facility located on Highway 53/Hog Mountain Road in Watkinsville. The expansive park is under the management of the Oconee County Parks and Recreation Service and offers multiple tennis courts, soccer fields and baseball fields, walking track, senior citizen center, as well as a fitness center with state-of-the-art weight and cardiovascular equipment, and the Veteran’s Memorial. Reservations can be made for the pavilion and athletic fields for tournaments or private parties.
Herman C. Michael Park
The Herman C. Michael Park is located 1.5 miles from the Oconee County High School near the corner of Highway 53 and Elder Road. It is the headquarters for the Oconee County Parks and Recreation Service and is situated on 37 acres. The park features three lighted softball fields, six lighted tennis courts, two volleyball courts, a gymnasium with a full sized basketball court, a multipurpose field suitable for soccer, one playground and a paved walking trail. The park also takes reservations for private parties and events.
Heritage Park is s conveniently located in Farmington on Highway 441, seven miles south of downtown Watkinsville and ten miles north of downtown Madison. It contains 364 acres of natural resources with woods and creeks, bordered by the Appalachee River. The large open air arena at Heritage Park was created with agricultural and special events in mind. The feeder barn has thirty-one stalls and a small show arena. There are separate wash racks for animal shows, rodeos and other large events. Heritage Park is also home to one of the most challenging bike trails in the state, measuring almost 10 miles in length.
Harris Shoals Park
Harris Shoals Park (located behind Watkinsville City Hall) is a wonderful facility that affords playground equipment for children, a picnic pavilion, a walking track, and a baseball field for public use.
In the town of Bogart (in northwestern Oconee County), The Oconee County Parks & Recreation department (OCPRD) another recreational complex exists. This facility includes baseball and softball fields, a walking track, playground, and picnic pavilion. Additionally, a softball field and playground are available for use in North High Shoals. There are also a number of public parks and areas within the community which enhance the quality of life within Oconee County.
There are three golf courses located entirely or partially within Oconee County. Membership and/or daily fee information can be obtained from each of the courses. The courses, and their respective contact information, include:
Agribusiness and Arts
Washington Farms, located in both Loganville and Watkinsville, are pick-your-own farms. They offer self-pick strawberries, blackberries, blueberries and pumpkins, in season. They also feature corn mazes, festivals, hay rides and trips to the barns to visit the animals. School field trips and parties can also be arranged. They are opened seasonally depending on what is avialable for harvest.
Located off Union Church Rd in Watkinsville, the farm features eight (8) different irrigated varieties of blueberries, and two (2) different varieties of blackberries. Buckets are provided at the facility. They are open mid-June to mid-August.
This is Oconee County’s premier Greenhouse, Giftshop and Nursery Facility. They specialize in unique plants, outdoor art, pottery, fresh-picked peaches and more. Take the kids! They always have several flavors of homemade ice cream.
Visitors and members will find a quiet retreat in the outdoor gardens, draped in art immersed in the natural surroundings. Inside, OCAF treats the art enthusiast to all mediums in its quest to support fellow artists and the community as well as encourage a better understanding of the cultural arts. These arts include the fine visual arts, expression in dance and theatre, educational classes and workshops. OCAF often hosts special events as well.
Chapelle Gallery is located in this historic Haygood House on Main Street in Watkinsville. Chappelle Gallery was opened in 2001 by Jerry & Kathy Chappelle after the Haygood House was restored over a 2-1/2 year period. The gallery features American crafts. All the artists have a National reputation.
